Whether we're crossing oceans by sailboat, overlanding across continents, or venturing off-grid by foot or bike, keeping your friends, family, and followers in the loop is more than just fun it's essential!
On our global journey, a normal cellphone isn't enough. After careful research we chose to track and share our progress using a powerful two-tiered approach: Garmin InReach and PredictWind DataHub. Together, they’ve become our ultimate duo for staying connected, safe, and visible, no matter where in the world we are.
Why Real-Time Tracking Matters
Exploring the world is about the experience, but sharing that journey can be just as rewarding. Here’s why we wanted a reliable tracking setup:

What We’re Using
Garmin InReach
This little device punches far above its weight. The Garmin InReach connects to the Iridium satellite network, which means we get global coverage from the middle of the ocean to remote mountain ranges.

It’s compact, rugged, and works even when phones don’t.
PredictWind DataHub
The DataHub is the digital brain of our boat setup. Made by PredictWind (best known for their weather routing and marine forecasting), this device takes all our tracking and sensor data and sends it online automatically.
Here’s what it does:
- Pulls tracking data from our boat systems
- Creates live, embeddable maps for websites and blogs
- Logs our route history so we can replay or review it anytime
- Seamlessly switches between Wi-Fi, cellular, or Starlink Mini for data upload.
How We Set It Up
Setting this up for your own journey is easier than you’d think. Here's what we did:
- Installed the PredictWind DataHub on our Leopard 40 Catamaran
- Wired it into our boat’s 12V power supply
- Connected it to the NMEA2000 network
- Linked it to the internet via our Starlink Mini
- Synced our tracking preferences and activated live tracking
- Shared our live map using PredictWind’s embeddable URL
- Configured it to share data with No Foreign Land.
Bonus: Weather Routing & Forecasting
Because PredictWind is also a weather platform, we get advanced weather routing, wind forecasts, and ocean current data right inside the same system. This has been a game-changer when planning passages or avoiding storms.
